FAQs

Why use natural skin care?

The skin is the body’s largest organ and research proves it capable of absorbing up to 60% of the ingredients in the products we apply.  The majority of bath and body products available today contain many commonly used synthetic ingredients such as Parabens and Sulfates.  These synthetic ingredients have been found to cause problems ranging from irritation to damaging long-term effects.

What is the difference between natural soap and commercial soap?

The term “soap” is heavily regulated.  Companies are not allowed to use it unless it is truly a real, handcrafted bar of soap.  Many commercial companies try to compensate that by using terms such as “beauty bar”, “dry skin cleanser” or “anti-aging moisturizing bars”.

Handcrafted soap is rich in glycerin, a natural emollient, which is a bi-product of soap making process.  During commercial “soap” making process, the glycerin is removed and sold separately for its moisturizing qualities, to be used in creams and lotions.

Is there lye in your soap?

Lye is an alkaline solution necessary to make soap.  It is a caustic and dangerous chemical that should be used with extreme caution.  When lye is combined with fat (animal or vegetable) in proper proportions, a chemical reaction called saponification occurs.  The end result is soap and glycerin.

Although, in the past, lye soap was considered harsh and drying, this  was due the lack of sophisticated scales.  When saponification occurred, some lye was still present in soap, making it harsh.  Today, soap made with lye is completely safe when made properly, using every precaution.

How long does a soap last?

Our cold-process soap is cured for a minimum of 6-7 weeks.  You simply cannot rush a good thing.  During the curing process, most of the water used in the recipe evaporates, leaving a hard, mild, long lasting bar.  The longevity of our soap ranges from one week to six months, depending on the user.  The average life of soap is one month.  Taking care to keep your soap dry and drained between uses will add longevity to your soap.

What is the difference between a shampoo bar and a regular soap bar?

Shampoo bars are natural conditioning shampoos in solid bar forms.  They are full of moisturizing glycerin, and free of SLS and other harmful ingredients.  They are formulated to make more lather than body bars, leaving no residue.  Body soap bars have a higher fat content, which makes them more moisturizing.  Although a shampoo bar can be used for hair and body, while body bar should be used only on body, you may have great results using them all over.

Are your products tested on animals?

Really! Don’t talk about our friends and relatives like that!  No, we never test any of our products on animals, only on willing friends and relatives.  They seem very happy to test our latest formula and give us feedback.

How to store natural handmade soap?

Our soaps are made with extra oils and butters, and without any synthetic stabilizers or preservatives.  These un-reacted oils add beneficial properties to your soap, but can spoil over a long period of time.  Store your natural handmade soap away from excessive humidity and heat.
